Prebiotics Help A Healthy, Normal Gut Microbiome In Animals

Prebiotic supplements are not utilized by livestock but are foods that feed probiotics to support their growth and well-being.  Since probiotics are known to help maintain normal digestive health and support the immune system, ensuring their viability and growth helps your livestock.

What Are Prebiotics?

Prebiotics are sugars, carbohydrates, plant fibers that are not digested by the animal and are products, like MOS, that are fermented by good bacteria in the gut.  A by-product of this fermentation is the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA’s) that are absorbed and utilized by the ruminant.

Common Prebiotics To Support Normal Gut Bacteria

Here are a few common prebiotics that are utilized in supplementing livestock diets, including dairy, beef, sheep, goat, alpaca and llama, to support probiotics.

  • Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) – a short chain sugar easier for bacteria to digest than inulin
  • Inulin
  • Mannnan-oligosaccharides (MOS) – Helps normalize gut microflora and support normal digestive health
  • Psyllium
